Memoir

We begin a unit on memoir-writing this week. For your response, please write a paragraph (not a sentence, not a few lines: a paragraph) that defines and describes this genre. You may use the mentor texts that I gave you in class as a guide, as well as any other resources you like.

For your comment, find someone who included in their definition and description something that you did not. Identify the "something" and describe why it is important to consider that feature when thinking about writing in the memoir genre.

103 comments:

  1. The genre, memoir, is about an important moment in your lifetime. It is usually written in first person. Let's say if I am writing the story it's about me. If you write it, it's about you. It's must be nonfiction to be a real memoir. It can be however shirt or long you want it as long as it's true and about you.

  2. Memoir is a brief/short experience from a persons life. Memoirs are non-fiction and has no conflict. It is a first person narration. Which means the narrator is apart of the experience. In a memoir you skip moments and you tell then you show. Also it focuses on the main idea. During the memoir it goes from tell to show.

  3. A memoir is a descriptive writing peice that explains a time in someones life. This peice usually explains a time in someones life when that persons life changes. Wether its a sad time or a happy time in that persons life it changes them for the rest of their life.

  4. I forgot to put it has to be about yourself. It is important to think about this while writing a memoir because say if you are writing and you write about someone else it is not a memoir. Then you would have to re write it and make it be about you.

  6. A memoir is a type of writing that is almost like a personal narrative, but not quite. For example, memoirs are usually shorter than personal narratives, and have almost no distinct conflict. Another example is those Ralph Fletcher texts that we read; they were all light, carefree, and proved a point about life. Memoirs have to be about yourself, so that means first person narration.

-Fox O'Donnel/Emily Green (UGH...I hate my last name...That is SO why I changed it.)

Ms. Sills, can I share a piece of my memoir on one of my future posts? Because I'm like, six chapters deep and I refuse to stop.

  8. Kenny, you spelled short wrong and put shirt and I also get what you are trying to explain and I understand how a memoir can be written

  9. A memoir is a short or long experience in a persons life. Its usually written in first person. Also you are supposed to write about the main idea that your writing about.

  10. The genre memoir is a non fiction story about a small experience that happened in your life. In a memoir there isn't a conflict, instead you have to make a point, like in the memoir "School" by Ralph Fletcher the point/purpose was fairness. A memoir is usually only one topic, a small moment. Memoirs are told in first person narriation.

  11. The genre memoir is normally a moment in your life, a moment that changed you. A memoir is normally shorter than a personal narrative. A memoir is typically non- fiction, unless you changed so many things it became fiction. The memoir normally has symbolism. For example, in the memoir "Michele with one l," the memoir represented boys and girls. Even though it started off being about his family it ended up being about boys and girls.

  12. The genre, Memoir is a story about a bunch of important momments in your lifetime. A memoir must be nonfiction. Who ever is writing the memoir it is about them. You can include other characters but it is mainly about you. If your friend writes it then it is about your friend and his expirences during his lifetime. However the story doesnt have to be long or short. As long as it's about you and you are telling the truth and it's nonfiction it is a memoir.

  13. Emily I like how you said a memoir has no conflict. Thats one thing I forgot to put in on my definition and that is imortant when writing a memoir because memoirs usally pass a point without a conflict.

    ReplyDelete
  14. One thing Matt Gugliomo stated that I did not was that in the memoir, it can be a happy time or a sad time. You also must be very descriptive. For example, if you say that I was so hot, it’s dull. If you say I could feel the sweat dripping slowly down my face, it automatically suggests to the reader he/she is hot.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Matt added something in his description that I didn’t, which was being very descriptive. It’s good to make your memoir descriptive because if it isn’t, the memoir will be short and very boring. For example, if you say “my dog ran away,” that’s very boring and not descriptive at all. If you say, “I watched as my dog Lulu sprinted down the road, and panicked I called after her, ‘Lulu no!!!’”

    ReplyDelete
  16. To me a memior is writing about yourself. In a memoir you can have anything that you think is necasary for the writing. For example, today we read a memoir about a man's childhood. He included only the things that he needed to include. It was short and to the point. If I'm writing a memoir about my sister, I would include when she was born, her first word, and how old she is today, not when she met her 8th friend, or how many teeth she had when she was 7. The point is, you can't make it too long, or people won't care for it.

  17. Cassie wrote that it is first person narration and has no conflict. I didnt have either of those 2 things in my response this week. It is important to remember these when writing a memoir because you cant include a conflictand you have to use this kind of narration.

  18. A MEMIOR IS A SHORT PART OF SOMEONES LIFE IT IS ALMOST LIKE A PERSONAL NARRATIVE. IT IS OFTEN WRITTEN IN FIRST PERSON NARRATION. IT IS BRIEF AND IT FOCUSES ON A MAIN IDEA.

COMMENT; I AGREE WITH CASSIE THT IT HAS TO BE ABOUT YOURSELF, BUT I THINK SOMTIMES IT CAN HAVE A CONFLICT

  19. A memoir is a story about a part of your life when you learned or realized something important. It may contain anything you want in it,as long as it's true, and as long or short as you wish it to be. Usually,at the end of a memoir, you would explain what you have learned from the experience and if it had changed the way you act or feel since then. Sometimes it helps to clear a moral in life, the way you see things, or the way you see others.

  20. A memoir is a true story about the narrator's live. A memoir can included the show don't tell technique, it can also included pictuers to show the a moment in the book. All memoir's are first person narrator, it also includeds personal moments or experience. It stays on one topic and it doesn't change during the memoir. It is more briefer then a personal essay. Thier is no conflict in the story.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree with Emily that a memoir is like a personal essay but not quite, i also agree that there is no main conflict in a memoir.

    ReplyDelete
  22. A memoir is about an experience you had in your life. Memoirs are usually written to send the reader a message. There's no conflict, and it is written in 1st person narration. It's like a personal narrative except for the fact that there isn't a conflict in a memoir. Also, memoirs are usually about something that was importatn to you.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Matt, I like how you put in wether its a sad time or a happy time in that persons life it changes them for the rest of their life, because a memoir could be happy, sad, funny or anything it doesnt have to be a happy moment in your life.

  24. I'm sick and tired of waiting, so I'm gonna share a small part of my memoir:

The sheets ruffled against my skin as Toby shook me awake.
"Hey, stupid, we got a big day today", He groaned.
I smiled and hugged him. "Well, good morning to you, too!"
Now the only thing left to do was get Sharii, which wouldn't be all that bad, considering the fact that she lived in the middle of a huge pond, surrounded by sharp, deadly rocks. I don't think that's too horrible, do you?

You can just SEE the sarcasm burst.

    -Fox O'Donnel/Emily

Was I supposed to share that little tidbit, Ms. Sills?

  25. A memoir is a series of brief personal narratives; with observations about life linking them together. A memoir is non-fiction and it has no distinct conflict. It is written from personal experience. The purpose of a memoir is to make a point about life to the reader. Memoirs are always written in the first person. A memoir must be about yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  26. A memoir is one of the many genres of writing. Unlike most genres of writing, a memoir doesn't have an exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Memoirs do not have any conflict at all. They are written in first person and describe an event or category in someone's life using descriptive language. Memoirs all have a similar structure. The author tells the reader about an event in his/her life, then shows the reader that event, then the author explains what that event means to him/her. In the section of the memoir where the author shows the event, the author is usually teaching the reader a lesson. Memoirs often teach the reader a lesson about life. For example, in the Ralph Fletcher memoir, School, the lesson is that people have different learning styles. Ralph Fletcher uses his characters to bring these lessons to life. Other than that, memoirs are much like any other style of writing. They are written in paragraph format, have multiple characters, and use dialogue.

  27. One thing that Owen included in his description was that not every detail has to be included in a memoir. A memoir should only include the important information about the main point of the memoir. This is important because if too many unimportant details are included the mood lesson of the memoir might not be as clear. Also Owen, you can't write a memoir about your sister because a memoir has to be about yourself. You can write one about your childhood with your sister, but you can't write a memoir about your sister.

  28. A memoir is a piece of writing that is written about the life and past experiences of a person. It is always non-fiction and has no conflict. They consist of many short personal narratives and can be lengthy. They are divided into chapters and are also usually separated into parts that have to do with each other.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cassie included many things that I did not. One thing I forgot was to add that the memoir goes from a tell to a show repeating the process throughout the writing. This is important because it usually gives a meaning to the personal narrative (the show). I also didn’t add that a memoir is in first person. It is told from the perspective of the person in a certain experience and usually uses the word I and my. First person perspective is important because it shows the characters feelings and thoughts towards the situation.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The genre of memoir is a brief personal experience that you have once came upon in life. In a memoir you can show pictures or photographs. You can also "move through time", basically tell one part of the story and skip some time because maybe some parts are not as important. In a memoir there is no conflict. A memoir can be happy, sad, any thing you want it to be. Some parts of your memoir can be happy and other parts can be sad.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Michael Urban I did not include the "show don't tell" technique. This would be important to use in a memoir because you let the readers see the moment for themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  32. A memoir is a short story from the point of view of the author. A memoir can be about absolutely anything. Wether its something as simple as a vacation the author took with his family or something as complicated as the author becoming a parent or something. Also a memoir doesnt have a plotline or aconflict at all.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Owen is right about having to have only the important stuff in a memoir not everything about that moment or else the readers wont care for it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Bobby, a memoir isn't always brief, it can be as long as you want it to be. And it is always writen in first person narration, not often.

  35. A memoir is a type of writing genre. It is about a event that happened to you in your life.A memoir is writting in first person narration.A memoir might include a couple of characters and the wriiter is in it.In a memoir there is usualy some kind if diologe. There are paragraph, but their is no real conflict. While weritting a memoir you are alowed to skip from time to time. The main purpose in a memoir is to make a point about life.

  36. Jeremy. One thing that you said was that a memoir is divided into chapters.Im not positive but looking at the memoirs that ms.sills gave us they are not.A single memoir is just a couple of paragraphs that revolves around a single event.I think that you may have thought that all three memoirs ms.sills gave us was all one but they arent.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Amy - the fact that a memoir is a "series of brief personal narratives" is important to consider. It's important because sometimes the story skips ahead in time, and you don't want to have to add a bunch of detail inbetween the experiences. It's also important because sometimes you might want to have a short memoir, and you don't want to add the extra details. Hense the word "series."

    ReplyDelete
  38. A memoir is a personal experience that happened to you a long time ago or even recently. A memoir could and could no have a conflict in the story. A memoir is just like a personal narrative but different. The memoir can be in first person narration. You could write a memoir on someone else like a family member but more research would need to be done. A good memoir should include deatailed information and read in chronological order.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The genre, memoir is a short story about a personal event or experiance in someones life. There is usually no conflict and it is written in first person. I think it is called memoir because it is basicly a memory from the authors past. The story is usually special to the author, or an important event in their life. The memoir is also non-fiction because if it was fiction none of it would be a special event in the authors life.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Cassie,
I agree with you. I think that main idea is really important in a memoir. I left this out but if it wasn't on the main idea then I think that the story would make no sense. I should have added this in or thought about it more because that sounds like a really important topic in a memoir.

  46. Michael said memoirs can include the show dont tell technique and i did not include this in my comment.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I like what Michael Urban said about the show don't tell technique. That is VERY important in a memoir because you want to keep the reader interested and not to have them walk away from it. It would be good to give descriptions because you want to have the reader at the edge of their seat.

  48. A memior is an important event that happend in your life time, usually written by the person it happend to. 55. Emily, you wrote that a memoir has no conflict, which I didn't include in my response. I think this is important because a memoir doesn't necessarily need a conflict to learn something from, just somethign that helped you see something or someone clearer.

    ReplyDelete
  56. A memoir is about a time in someones life, but it has to be non fiction. A memoir is in a short period of time, but with tons of details. In the memoir you need to show don't tell, it will make they story more interesting for the reader. In a memoir their is no plot line like no conflict because you are talking about a memory in your life.

You can tell a little then move on to a year later if you would like.

A memoir is an evolution of the autobiography. An autobiography is a story written by yourself about your life, or your life story so far. A memoir, in the style which the publishing market are flooded with at the moment, tends to deal with a more specific period or theme in your life.

  68. A memoir is a nonfiction story about a small moment in your life. You would write a memoir about a small interesting time in your life like that time you went to Disney, or when your little sister/brother was born or when you got your first dog. A memoir is usually written in first person and can be as long as you would like as long as its one, and only one small moment in your life.

  69. Julia, even though i did'nt write that there is no plot line, I still agree with you. I like how you said that a memoir can be any mood and I also agree with that.

  70. A memoir is just a little event that happened in your lifetime, therefore it is nonfiction. Writing a memoir isn't like writing a novel, first off memoirs are often shorter and they don't have a plotline. Memoirs are told in first person and there is often a purpose as to why they chose that one event to write about. When you write a memoir you focus on one event, for example, a memoir we read in class skipped through a whole summer because it was irrelevant to the story.

  72. A memoir is a unique kind of genre. Memoirs are examples of life issues. Also, memoirs are written about a past event that the author him/herself has experienced. Additionally, this form of writing is always written in first person narration. The purpose of a memoir is to send a message across to the reader. Most importantly, memoirs have no conflict, so they also have no exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, or resolution.

  73. Genre, memior is a story, which includes a time in your life which is described without an conflict. It is a nonficton story with obsolutely NO plotline. Theres is only one point of a memoir and it is to explain your life event. It also has to be filled with more then enough detail.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Heather, I agree with you using the show dont tell will make the story more interesting for the reader.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Noah, one thing that you included in your post that I did not mention in mine was the format of a memoir. You said that the author tells the reader about the event, shows the reader the event, and then explains it to the reader. This feature is important to a memoir because this is the process the author uses to send the message across to the reader. Without this format, the piece would be neither an effective nor a clear memoir.

    ReplyDelete
  76. One thing that Noah added that I forgot was that a memoir uses the format where the author tells about the event, shows us the event, and then describes why the event was important. This format is what makes a memoir different from an autobiography. Autobiographies don’t usually include reflections.

  85. Memoirs are peoples memories and recollection put down on paper for everyone to read .In some ways they are similar to auto biographies, but with a more personal touch . they contain stories and anecdotes pertinent to the persons life .As memories fade and aren't nearly as factually accurate as an impartially written biography .

  88. A memoir describes a moment or moments in a persons life. This makes it non-fiction. It's always written in first person. Memoirs have no conflict or plotline. A memoir can jump ahead several years from moment to moment. Memoirs can be short or long.

  89. Noah your right in memoirs the authors reflect on the moment they're talking about. I completely forgot about that. That is important because if you didnt reflect on the moment you would only be telling about somthing that happend.

I didn't inclued that memiors could inclued show don't tell. I agree with you, because you can use show don't tell this is good to consider, because it would be boring to just keep telling and would make the story sound better.

  96. Genre, memoir is a story that includes a time in your life without a conflict. it’s a non-fiction story. Theirs no plot line. The point of a memoir is to explain that moment in life. Also you need to use a lot of details.

    TYHASIAH BELL,
I agree with you a memoir can be a advent from the past. And it doesn’t have a plotline or a conflict.

  97. Memior is a series of breif personal stories, used to make a point about life. Memior is a non-fiction genre and is always told in first person. A unique thing about Memiors is that they don't have a distinct conflict. Like other genres of writing, memiors have alot of detial, several characters and usualy have diologe. Memiors must always be from experiences that the author had and cannot be fiction.

  98. Fredy, What I forgot to put in my response that you did is that you can jump from time to time in your memior. This is important because a memior is usually brief and only includes important detail. Memiors are told from different points in life and does not always stick to a certian time frame.

  100. Aamnda, I totally agree that a memior is a writing piece that happened in someones life and that it is most commonly in a first-peron-narration, but I dont agree with you that it is a non-fiction story. I think it would be closer to a biography or auto-biography maybe.

  102. I agree with Cassie

i didnt include the following. A Memoir is a brief/short experience from a persons life. Memoirs are non-fiction and has no conflict. It is a first person narration. Which means the narrator is apart of the experience. In a memoir you skip moments and you tell then you show. Also it focuses on the main idea. During the memoir it goes from tell to show.
